How we write and review

Legal information is only useful if it is right. This is how the information on Lawyer.si is put together and kept current.

Every rule shows its source

When a page states a rule of law, it cites the statute, regulation or court decision the rule comes from and links to it. We cite primary sources: the codes published by the California, Texas and Washington legislatures, the Code of Federal Regulations, and court opinions. Each source shows the date it was last checked.

State differences are never smoothed over

Injury law is state law. A deadline that is two years in California is three in Washington, and a rule that reduces a claim in one state can end it in another. Where the three states differ, pages show them side by side rather than describing a rule as if it applied everywhere.

Attorney review, stated honestly

Emery Brett Ledger is the attorney responsible for this site. Each guide carries a line under its title that says whether an attorney has reviewed that page and the date of the review. If a page is still waiting for review, the line says so. We do not describe a page as attorney reviewed until it has been.

How pages are drafted

Drafts are prepared with the help of artificial intelligence software and then checked, statement by statement, against the primary sources they cite. The software does not decide what the law is. The sources do, and a lawyer is responsible for what is published.

What we leave out

  • Estimates of what a claim is worth. No formula can produce one honestly.
  • Promises or predictions about results.
  • Rules for states where the firm’s lawyers are not licensed.

Keeping pages current

Laws change. Each state’s rules are rechecked against the current code on a regular schedule and whenever we learn of a change, and the date on the page is updated when they are. California bills passed in one year usually take effect the following January, so every California section is rechecked each January.

What this site is not

This site gives general legal information. It is not legal advice, and reading it does not create an attorney client relationship.
